ABOUT THE DOCUMENTARY
“BROKEN: BEYOND DIVIDE” – “A Family, A Nation and the Fight for Democracy” is a documentary that explores how political polarization is tearing apart families, friendships, and communities. Through real testimonies, in-depth analysis, and a deeply personal journey, we seek to understand how we got here—and, more importantly, how we can rebuild dialogue. This is not about taking sides; it’s about listening to heal.
As the world experiences growing ideological fragmentation, this film examines how even the closest families can be divided by politics.
Told from the perspective of a family exiled in the United States, the documentary dives into the experiences of those who have witnessed the erosion of democracy firsthand. Through intimate interviews, archival footage, and expert analysis, it uncovers the historical patterns and psychological mechanisms that fuel polarization.
With a balanced approach, Divided We Stand aims to spark dialogue and encourage reflection on the future of democracy—not only in the U.S. but around the world.

OUR HISTORY
The origin of BROKEN: BEYOND DIVIDE comes from a personal story that reflects a global reality. Our director, Ingrid, grew up in a home where political conversations often ended in arguments, where every news story had two versions, and where fear of the opposing perspective was a daily reality.
When her family emigrated from Venezuela to the United States, they thought they had left behind division and conflict. However, they soon realized that their new home held a different kind of war—an ideological battle that was also tearing apart families, friendships, and communities.
This documentary was born out of the need to understand why we have become so radically divided and whether it is possible to find common ground. Through real voices, expert insights, and firsthand testimonies from those experiencing this divide, Divided We Stand seeks to spark an urgent and necessary dialogue.
WHY IT MATTERS
In an increasingly polarized world, the question of political division is no longer just an abstract concept—it’s a reality affecting relationships, communities, and societies at large. “BROKEN: BEYOND DIVIDE” seeks to highlight the personal and societal consequences of political polarization by diving into the stories of those directly impacted. By focusing on a Venezuelan-American family’s experience, the documentary explores how ideological divides can fracture even the closest of ties, leaving us questioning our collective future.
Political polarization doesn’t just exist on a grand scale—it manifests in our homes, our friendships, and our daily lives. It influences the way we vote, the news we consume, and the very way we see each other. It impacts how we engage with democracy and what it means to live in a shared society. This issue matters because it goes beyond politics—it is about our capacity to communicate, empathize, and coexist.
The rise of misinformation, the manipulation of media, and the fragmentation of the public sphere are all forces driving us apart. What once were meaningful conversations have now turned into echo chambers, reinforcing entrenched ideologies and deepening divisions. Without intervention, this growing divide threatens the very fabric of democratic societies.
“BROKEN: BEYOND DIVIDE” is an invitation to look critically at this issue, to reflect on the role we each play in contributing to or alleviating polarization, and to ask ourselves: How can we bridge the gap in a divided society? By examining the causes, consequences, and potential solutions to political division, the documentary hopes to spark dialogue, promote empathy, and ultimately inspire collective action towards a more unified future.

HOW WE WILL DO IT
We will approach this documentary by blending personal stories with expert analysis, creating a rich and complex narrative that sheds light on the complexities of political polarization. Through intimate interviews with family members, friends, and political experts, we will trace the evolution of ideological divides, uncovering the cultural, psychological, and media-driven forces that fuel these divisions.
The documentary will explore how a shared history of exile and political struggle can evolve into a fragmented present, where different perspectives on democracy and governance emerge within the same family. We will go beyond political analysis to address the emotional and personal costs of polarization, showcasing the impact on relationships, identity, and unity.
We will present an intimate yet global view of the political landscape by traveling across various locations in the United States and engaging in conversations with key individuals who have lived through these transitions. The film will use a combination of archival footage, personal testimonies, and expert commentary to piece together the larger narrative of how polarization in one country has profound ripple effects on individuals, families, and society.
Ultimately, our goal is not just to document the division, but to explore the possibility of reconnection, seeking to answer the crucial question: Can we rebuild common ground, even in the face of overwhelming political differences?
